Harvey Was Here!
I simply love the movie “Harvey” with James Stewart and I think of this funny movie every time I begin to dye eggs for our church egg hunt or just because I like to dye eggs at this time of year.
In the movie …. Harvey, is a very large invisible rabbit that, is only visible to Jimmy Stewart’s character, Elwood P. Dowd.
It is hilarious because no one else can see Harvey, and the family thinks Elwood should most likely be committed or at least have a Doctor’s help.
That is why I purchased these very large eggs, about 5 years ago…they made me think of the very large “Harvey”, … so I call them my “Harvey” Eggs and they have become a tradition…. hidden in and about our pool courtyard!
Well, they are really too large to “hide”…but they sure look purteee among the plants.
Which brings me to dying eggs.
Everyone knows how simple it is to dye eggs, but I thought I would show you how I dye them.
I boil my eggs in a little egg cooker…no guessing, buzzer sounds when eggs are hard boiled. 😉
I am sure you have dyed eggs in the same way for the last 20, 30, or 40 years…..it really hasn’t changed that much.
A colored Pill, plus 1 tablespoon of vinegar.
You can use the store bought “pills” that you drop into a cup and add vinegar (to adjust the ph so the “dye” will adhere to the shell) OR you can use food coloring which is easy…just a bit messier in my opinion…but still a viable way of dyeing eggs.
I have found that tongs are perfect for softly laying the egg in the coloring and for removing the egg to dry.
Then there is the matter of drying the dyed eggs…One of the ways I like is to use little pins from my sewing box stuck into Styrofoam.
OR, if I am being lazy…I use bits of paper towel placed in my egg holders and that works just fine too.
I have never been a fan of those little egg cut-outs on the box of PAAS dye…my eggs either bend the flimsy cardboard… or they touch each other and the dye transfers to the other eggs.
Below are a few pics of “suggested” Colors for your eggs. Pastels or brights?
And as far as the egg colors go…I am not particular about the shades….some eggs, I leave in longer than others, but that is about the extent of “making” the dyed job “match” something or other. 🙂
Also, I am not a fan of those little stickers or the wax crayon or little wax doily effects….I just like a plain simple dyed egg…and if the egg is not perfectly, evenly…. colored…so what?
Guess I am just old fashioned because that is the way my Grandmothers and my Mother dyed eggs and that is just fine with me.
I do like to decorate the house for my Springtime/Easter theme.
As you can see, I love rabbits!
And did I say I like dying eggs?
Yep! I do.
Do you my dear readers, like to dye eggs or do you buy the little baskets with chocolate bunnies and eggs already packed in?
I like them too….
If you haven’t seen the Movie “Harvey”…check it out….it is an oldie but goodie in my opinion. 🙂
Enjoy this wonderful Spring Week-end, I know I am.
Please comment, I'd love to hear from you.
