In an earlier post, I told you, my dear readers….The Captain and I hosted a Soup Or Salad Potluck…AND we asked our guests to come as a cartoon character!
And did they ever! There was some amazing outfits….and it never ceases to amaze me at the cleverness of these Florida friends!
I do have one confession to make and perhaps it is an excuse, but my costume left a lot to be desired.
You see, my original plan was to wear a simple red dress with white anklets and black loafer shoes….keep my red hair curly, grab my little Jesse James and carry him around with me. Oh, and the other part of my costume was to be white oval cutouts over my eyes. Can you guess who that cartoon character would be?
Yep! Little Orphan Annie!
But…no,…I didn’t go with that idea …I had been Annie at a Halloween party years ago and the oval eyes gave me a headache and I kept running into things.
The second plan of action was another redhead…..Jessica Rabbit!
I think it is obvious why that idea didn’t work out….Yep! I didn’t have long, purple gloves!
Since I had about a month to work out this costume….I had plan “C, D, E, F and G”!
Plan C: Merida from the Movie “Brave”.…her hair was right! Actually, I look kinda like that at zero dark thirty when the alarm goes off…hair askew and eyes wide open like a deer caught in headlights… but I didn’t have a bow and arrow!
Plan D: Ariel from “The Little Mermaid”.…but you can see why it is hard to be a good hostess and serve food when you have a tail…. and I would have had to stayed in the pool for the whole party!
Plan E: The Little Red Haired Girl from Charley Brown…..first off, my legs are too long….have you ever wondered why the Peanuts characters have really, really short legs? Hmmmm?
Plan F: OK, the last resort was Ronald…but he is a guy and I didn’t really want to get into that transgender thing.
So that left one other redhead….Plan G:
Yep, Wilma! from the Flintstones….only problem with that was the time had slowly slithered away and now it was 3 pm on the day of the Soup Or Salad Potluck!
So, I took a vote with myself and said what was more important? Food or costume? Well, obviously the food because it meant so much to so many people….nourishment!
Where as a costume? Not so important. So I grabbed a leopard scarf from my drawer and tied it on my red hair that I put up in a sorta messy bun. I put on a long top…sorta like a dress, but I kept capri pants on underneath. Anyway, that was it! A costume that was sorta like a costume….and I almost got away with it.
You know the line from the movie “Casablanca”?…. “Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.”
As our colorful guests started arriving…..I looked up from my cheeseboard and there she was…..another “Wilma Flintstone”!
I mean, what are the odds?
OK, my friends and family and wonderful readers from all-over-the-world-who-I-love-with-all-my-heart-and-soul…YOU be the judge as to who was the best Wilma at the Soup Or Salad Potluck!
Ok, here is another pic of “Wilma Flintstone” in case you have forgotten what she looked like.
Below is the Ace of Cakes (note the brown roots showing under her fake red hair, not that I am trying to influence your fair voting)
And below is a good close up of my costume.
I will let you be the judge on which of us nailed “Wilma”…but keep in mind…my hair was already red.
Now, that we have established the winner of the “Wilma” category….please take a look at a few of our well dressed guests!
We had Cruella deville with Spiderman! I think Spiderman is either trying to look down her dress or he thinks he is Superman and can see through it.
Speaking of Superman…here is Clark Kent with Wonder Woman! Is there nothing that woman can’t do? Well, I guess not..after all she isn’t called Wonder Woman for nothing.
And guess who brought the Spinach Salad? Yep! Popeye the sailor man accompanied by his little Sweet Pea! (I didn’t ask about Olive Oyl, but I also didn’t ask what kind of “dressing” was in the salad)
We also have Dora the Explorer…..and her exploring map! Clever girl! You should have seen what she had in her backpack! (I’ll never tell)
And Mr. Magoo (also know as “the Captain”)….in the yellow shirt, hat, sunglasses and cane …when he wasn’t bumping into things, he played the bartender. Note Magnum PI, behind Dora….his beard and mustache are a little white, but his shirt is right on.
Minnie Mouse came with Grumpy from the 7 Dwarfs…..We won’t tell Mickey that Minnie came with someone else but just between you and me, I think Grumpy was missing Snow White as he was really grumpy!! 😉
Duke the Drug Dealer…..note the drugs in his pocket….lucky the coppers or narcs didn’t show!
Several of our wonderful friends decided they would come as they were/are and of course that was just fine too!
Thanks to the members of the “Birds IN Paradise” group for a wonderful and great time!
We missed those of our group who could not be here, some are sno-birds and some had other plans.
And we missed those who have moved away to Hawaii and Colorado. Speaking of you Janet and Bud and you, Melody. 😉
Hugs and Blessings to all
