I know….
I have never been considered a trend setter.
Trends are so, so, well, trendy.
Which brings me to the subject of my post today.
2018 Trends.
I read that the trends for 2018 include some of the things many of us love about our homes…
And,…..
Some things we love are going out of style.
If you are like me, I go with what I like whether it is a trend or not.
It is simple.
If I don’t like it, I don’t purchase it, paint it, build it or use it.
Example: Who hasn’t watched Chip and Joanna Gaines on ‘HGTVs Fixer Upper and noticed that she puts shiplap in almost every home they remodel?
Why, because it looks good as she decorates for a rustic farmhouse look and it is a look many copy for their own homes.
Consequently, many people added shiplap to their homes. The pic above and below pic are from the Fixer Upper show.
But…shiplap is supposedly a trend that it on it’s way out on the decorating scene.
As is the “rustic” farmhouse look.
It appears if you have a farmhouse look in mind…these are items that you should avoid.
It is funny, because a friend of mine moaned that she was just getting ready to add shiplap to her laundry room and now it is “out” as far as trends go.
I told her to do what she likes and to ignore the trend setters.
That has always been my mantra.
Another “trend” that is headed out the back door is all white kitchens. The trend is going back to darker wood cabinets.
Personally, I think white kitchen cabinets are a classic and will NEVER go out of style.
They have been around for years and years and they always look great.
But that is just my opinion and the opinion of one who has white cabinets that are not going to be changed.
White is clean and crisp and I love the look, especially here in Florida.
I will say that my kitchen is not all white….even though I just painted my backsplash white, my countertops are black granite.
Which is another “trend” going out.
Granite.
Quartz is the new granite…but many times one can not tell the difference in quartz and granite, depending on the pattern and an up close and personal look-see.
I will say that the Captain and I have quartz counter tops in a couple of our flip houses, and it is white with a grey marbling effect. Two of the flips have dark almost black cabinets and one has white shiny lacquer metal cabinets… and these houses are very expensive houses.
Which reminds me that I should post a few pictures one of these days of our current flip houses.
More to come on those pics at a later date.
But my black granite counter tops are staying too.
Although, I was thinking way before these “trends” came out… about putting a white marble or quartz counter top on the island where my cooktop is. Just to break up the black a bit.
Another trend that is OUT for 2018 is open shelving. (See another pic from Fixer Upper below)
Wow! There are a lot of people not liking that as they have lots of open shelving in their kitchens.
I don’t have any open shelving as I never jumped on that band wagon for two simple reasons.
One, I never wanted to lose cabinet space by putting in a couple open shelves in place of a cabinet…
And two, my open shelves would not stay neat and tidy with spotless glass ware, etc.
In the pretty Fixer Upper kitchen in the above photo…you will see the shiplap, the open shelving and an almost all white kitchen that Joanna Gaines did on HGTV’s Fixer Upper.
Apparently, those trends are leaving the building although I do love the above look with the warm hardwood floors and the double set of french doors.
So what is considered in for 2018?
Brass fixtures.
Which means Un-lacquered and unpolished with splatches of green patina.
Actually, I used to have polished brass and I did not like the way it not only showed spots, it started that green patina affect which I believe looks great atop the states capital buildings, but not on my bathroom sinks.
Ahhhh, no thank you, I will stick with the soon to be unpopular brushed nickel that I currently have at my kitchen sink.
AND the chromes, copper tones and blacks may be a thing of the past for some trenders.
To each his own, right?
Now let’s talk paint colors!
The Pantone color for 2018 is…purple, although some are going for the lighter shades like a pale lavender or lilac color.
The millennial pink trend from last year is staying in the softer hues which can be a good thing and is also a carry-over into 2018.
I actually used the soft pink in my master bedroom this Christmas on the tree and the accents in the room.
After taking the tree down, I left the pink pillows for a contrasting color for awhile, because, well, because I like it.
Minus the Christmas touches of course.
Well, there you are my dear readers. Those are a few of what is trending and what is not.
As I stated earlier….I have to be classified as “not trendy” unless it is a trend that I really like.
How about you? Do trends sway your home decor decisions or do you decorate with what pleases you?
I would love to hear your thoughts.
Have a great and beautiful day.

never be one to follow the trend – that is what makes us unique. I love what you do with your home and your kitchen. The kitchen is just so lovely and really the heart of your home.
Daughter no.1 commented that I’d mixed “styles” in my new decor… which confused her… Whereas I hadn’t gone with a “style” just with what I liked, so my jungle cushions fitted in to what she called a Skandi minimal style because of their color … .. in my mind anyway! Hehehe

I’m with you. I don’t care what is trending. I decorate with what I like. After all I have to live with it everyday. Can’t wait to see you house flips.

You are so right Sandy….The trends change so quickly that I would not be able to keep up with all the them, even if I liked them…. my house would be in a state of flux all the time. LOL
Yes, I do need to get busy on the flip houses postings, I have had several people asking what the status is.
Coming soon, promise.
