Spring And Birds Of A Feather Can Jumpstart Your Home Into Spring!

Spring! Who isn’t ready for Spring?

My hand is raised the highest as I have never been more ready for Spring than this year. The weather this year has really not been the “Norm”…whatever the “norm” is! Twin #1 called to tell me that he was grilling yesterday in the 77 degree weather in Kansas City.

Wow!….and the reason it is a “Wow!”… is that it was only 60-ish here in Florida and a cold 60-ish with a very cool wind.

However, the weather has not stopped the birds from visiting my Secret Garden and the joy they bring me as I watch them fluff in the bird bath or flutter from branch to vine atop the Pergola. I am not sure if their thoughts are turning to nesting…but my thoughts are definitely thinking of little bird nests.

Nests are a beautiful part of Spring… and I love using them in my Spring decorating.  I especially like the little grapevine nests that you can get at any craft store, and I like decorating them with eggs and sprigs of flowers. I also like putting little birds in the nests.  The birds can be fanciful as the above pic shows…or they can be more lifelike.

There is really no secret for feathering up these little nests or feathering big nests too.  I love real flowers of course, but for these nests…the silk or faux flowers work best.

When I think of Spring, I think of forsythia bushes with their long, brambly branches of bright yellow flowers!
I also think of soft, fluffy, white pussy willows or lavender clusters of lilacs.
The craft stores have a bountiful, bevy of all kinds of these faux flowers to choose from.

The way I begin my Spring decorating is to bring out my little nests….I like the ones that fit into the palm of my hand, because they look more “life size”.  Next, I decide which flowers to use.  I like using a bit of moss…the green moss or….. I sometimes use the Spanish moss which hangs from our Shady Lady Black Olive trees. Whichever you prefer just place a bit of moss in the nest.  Below you will see I also used tiny sprigs of colorful round beads.  These are from 1 stem that I found at Michael’s and I cut the little sprigs to place in the center near the eggs. You can find the eggs at your craft store.

The secret, if I have a secret at all is that I also pick up some little thin twigs from my own Garden (or you can purchase these at a craft store) and I stick them sporadically around the nest…much as a little bird might do.  It is okay to let the ends stick out. I poke a couple of sprigs of forsythia in and about the nest. The best piece of advice I can give you if you are making your own is that less is more. Do not over-do. Move the nest around and look at it from different angles and you will see what I am talking about.

I found these pretty little robin blue eggs several years ago at World Market and I smile every time I hold one in my hand. I use them for decorating at Easter too.  I like using the little nests to sit atop a few books on the coffee table, beside a small pitcher of fresh flowers….or nestled among a place setting for dinner or beside a cute little bunny with a pretty, little, pink hat. I found this adorable little bunny at Pier 1.  Another Pier 1 purchase is the white ceramic bunny peeking over the edge of a small plate.

So my dear readers…do you like to decorate for Spring?  If you haven’t tried your hand at little birds nests, I encourage you to do so.  They are so easy and they just make your home seem….well, just like Spring!
Hugs Always!
