“O Captain! My Captain!,”
“O Captain! My Captain!,” is a poem written in 1865, after the assassination of President, Abraham Lincoln …by the poet, Walt Whitman.
The phrase “O Captain! My Captain!,” has also been referred to in several movies !
I would like to share the Captain’s in my life.
There are two.
And I also happen to have two birthdays.
First and foremost is the spiritual part of my life, which is my faith which comes from John 3: 3.
Jesus answered him, ‘truly truly I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’
God, is my spiritual Captain and has been since I turned my life over to Him on April 17, 1967.
If you have followed me, you know, I have daily devotions and prayer…which is most uplifting!
It is my quiet time, my time to be alone.
My time to reflect.
My time to petition God for the needs of family and friends, as well as my needs.
My time to lift up our country and leaders in prayer.
My time to give thanks and praise.
A time to know that I am living an imperfect life in an imperfect world, but that I am given the gift of grace.
I know there is a time for everything.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 was printed on our wedding program knowing in our hearts, that this was the time for the Captain and I to be married.
I like the saying that if you do not feel close to God, guess who moved?
Which brings me to the second Captain in my life, my husband.
I thought you might like to get to know a little about this Captain, since his name is in the title of my Blog!
If you follow my Blog, you know I refer to him often.
The picture below is obviously from a long time ago, but he really hasn’t changed that much.
His hair is no longer dark but “seasoned” with gray, a lot of gray. A distinguished gray!
And the above pic is Gpa with one of our great grands, named after my late husband!
For those of you who know us… the Captain is a real Captain. He is a pilot and flies corporate jets.
He became a pilot as a teen-ager, has flown for several commercial airlines, (and he also flies helicopters)…before settling into flying private jets for the rich and famous!
I like to say he doesn’t fly me anywhere because I am neither rich, nor am I famous. LOL
The Captain can be heard to say he has the best “office” in the world….and the most wonderful view out his “office” windows….and I have to agree!
Below are just a few of the views he has from his “office” windows.
The Captain absolutely loves flying.
I don’t think he will ever retire from flying.
It is in his blood as they say.
So there you have it.
The two Captain’s of my life.
And today, my dear readers, is my actual birthday.
The day my mother gave me life.
She passed on 18 years ago, but not a day goes by that I do not think of her and miss her.
I have received lots of phone calls today, emails and birthday cards and I thank you all.
I am truly blessed.

Everyday Living says
Kari, what a precious post about your two captains. One of yours is also mine. I love that you share Christ with boldness. I love your hubby’s office views.. I did not realize that your first husband was deceased. Happy birthday sweet friend!
Kari says
Yes Pam, God blessed me with almost 30 years of marriage to a wonderful Christian man and I didn’t think I would be allowed a “second” in my lifetime. And then after 5 or so years of being a widow, He brought the Captain into my life. It was so perfect, because my late husband also traveled on the same type schedule (7 days on and 7 days off type of thing) so I was used to being alone for a week or so and then a husband home for a week or so. Not many women can deal with that type of situation, but I was already “seasoned” so it was a natural for me. Thank you for the birthday wishes. Bless you.
The Red Painted Cottage says
Just stopping by to wish you a Happy Belated Birthday! I was just reading a bit “about you” and realize approximately where you live. We used to winter in Sarasota for 7 years, but no long do. Boy, do I miss it!
Kari says

Thank you Candis for being my sister in Christ; Phil 1:3!! 🙂 His faithfulness has never wavered.
I love the verse…Jeremiah 32:27… and over the years, I have shared it when someone is hurting and going through the same difficult times. I don’t believe it is a coincidence. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Thank you for reading my posts, my dear friend! Love to Noel and Jennifer.
Always Me 🙂

Sandy says
Hi Kari,
Have been sick and still am, but I had to read your blog about Mr. Wonderful. Smile! So glad you found God in 1967. I have always known him, and he’s a blessing.
Kari says
Thank you Sandy and I hope you get to feeling better soon…
It is interesting to note that Billy Graham turned 95 this week.
I remember watching his telecasts and the major impact he had on people when he preached the Gospel…and inviting people to come “Just As I Am”.
I had gone to church as far back as I can remember…but it was that special day 47 years ago…with my Pastor and his wife, Dottie, that I became a born again Christian.
So glad you are too. 😉
Thanks for stopping by…and eat some chicken soup…I know a good recipe! 😉

Hello Sweet Kari,
I enjoy all your posts and the yummy recipes; you are an amazing cook with so many recipes that you have received and made up, and then graciously share with us!
I am encouraged by this post by the Lord’s sovereignty, and how He has faithfully brought you through many trials. And how wonderful it is to love and be loved.
Thankful for you and your blog:)

The Captain says
Over the short 11 year span we’ve been together, I get mushy too when I think of all we’ve done and all we have shared together. Our latest, having our oasis for retirement at the perfect time. Now I look forward to getting to the point where I can enjoy it as much as you do. luv you
Kari says
….I wouldn’t change a thing and would marry you all over again!!
Your girlfriend…;)
Karole says
I remember how “MUSHY” you were just telling me about “Mr. Wonderful” on our way to the Chiefs games…so glad you are so happy!
Kari says
All these years later and I am still mushy! What can I say? (I think I am going to keep the Captain around awhile) 😉
Oh, Karole…I sure miss our times riding that Kansas City Chief’s Bus to all the games….we had some great times and saw some great games, didn’t we?
We were quite the “groupies” for those guys! We froze our buns most of the time….but I wouldn’t change a thing…would you?
Thanks for stopping by!
