I have always thought fairies were special. When I was a little girl and put a tooth under the pillow…I just knew a tooth fairy would come in the night and leave me a quarter! I loved Tinker Bell in the story Peter Pan! I had a great imagination and loved to dream on such things. I think I am still a dreamer….
When the Captain and I bought this home in Florida, there was a bird bath in front of the adobe wall that had seen better days. The patina was beautiful with blues and greens sparkling in the light. The base seemed in good condition but the bowl had holes in the bottom making it impossible to hold any water for the birds.
The Captain wanted to toss it out, but I said no. I just couldn’t part with it. I am not sure why, but I thought it was special. Maybe it was the little patined birds sitting atop the bowl… Silly, huh? I just knew I would have a use for it one day, and left it alone.
So it sat there…day in and day out…no longer to hold water, but a constant reminder that it was lonely and needed a purpose!
Then, one day, when the bowl had fallen off for the upteenth time…(sometimes heavy rain or a critter trying to jump on it….or careless lawn gardener bumping it…or for whatever reason)….it suddenly came to me!
A light bulb went off in my head! I have a lot of that happenin’ and it usually means the Captain has a new “fix it, build it” chore to do. But not this time! My Beloved could rest!
As I picked up the bowl holding the fragile piece in my hand. BLINK! (that is the light bulb going off) It suddenly became clear…oh, sorry, I just said that didn’t I? How about…I had a great idea? yeah, that phrase works! 🙂
A fairy home! Of course! Wasn’t it obvious?
Ok, with that settled…I started looking around the garage in my gardening cabinet looking for something, anything to make it all come together.
I found an old hanging basket filler…yep, that would work.
I also found a clear plastic pot water tray…yep, that will work, but I would have to cut a hole out of the center for the bowl to be able to sit on the stand again. OR, I might just set the Fairy bowl (home) on the ground somewhere in my Secret Garden…I would make that decision later on. AND a red cardinal on a wire that I used to stick in the ground when we went camping.
I found two ceiling fan pull extenders. One with a small rabbit …(imagine my excitement when I looked closer to see wings) and a large lady bug, not quite to proportion but it would work.
I had bought a bunch of ceiling fan pulls at a sale a couple years ago for the four garage ceiling fans. I used four of them and stuffed these in the bottom of my gardening basket!
I had to buy them because they extended the existing pulls.
Did I tell you that I am vertically challenged?
As I was assembling my “finds”, I remembered another item I had.
A little fairy standing on a sunflower that I kept on my laundry room shelf. Not exactly an outdoor item, but she would fill in nicely until I found a replacement. Besides, all she had to look forward to was seeing my dirty laundry…or unfolded towels from the dryer every day. I would give her a new prominent place where she could see the sights of the outside world. She would be liberated!
I was getting excited now as my thoughts challenged me to think of what I could use for the fairy home.
In the office, I had another fairy type angel…her hair in rollers and she had a tub of ice cream sitting in front of her. She wasn’t as dainty as the sunflower fairy, but she could be the overweight fairy. 🙂
Fairies can’t all be slim, can they?
I love this little “eating” fairy! She used to sit in my work office on my desk top computer….(yes, a long time ago) and I had another little “secretary type fairy” who dangled her legs over my monitor, but she lost her head…literally when she got knocked off her perch. I am sure these two little girls will be remembered by any of the Airline people who stopped by my office.
I know I still have her head and body…. Somewhere! Of course, there was a plan to glue her back together! Someday!
Back to the fairy home…I placed the water tray in the bottom of the bird bath. I then added the hanging pot filler. I had to cut it to the right size (with shears) and then I added potting mix. I pinched a small bunch of my alysum and a couple other ground covers and placed them on the potting mix. Then I placed my lady bug, bunny, and the two fairies in strategic spots and finally added the cardinal.
I think it looks pretty cute…I have not put it on the pedestal yet…I may just place it at the base of one of the trees, but for right now, I want to look at it on the table in my Secret Garden.
This is a view from the top…

Thanks Sandy…My gardening cabinet always has treasures in it as I usually make up my own hanging baskets. This year I have hanging petunias (some I bought and some I made)
I have a lot of huge pots sitting on the Lanai and in the Secret Garden…so I am continually working with water trays (some break)and gardening tools and gloves! The Captain buys my gloves by the bulk, because I am always losing one…perhaps that is how my garden grows? 😉
