Spring Seeds and Weeds! Yep! Seeds and Weeds!
OK ….I know many of you are in the depths of Winter…
I see from the news that the temp in Kansas City was 21 last evening and will stay in the single digits for the rest of the week!! Brrrrr that is cold!
The Twin living in Leavenworth….no! not that part of Leavenworth! 🙂 (He doesn’t have any bars on his windows! ) ….. is fast getting tired of the cold weather, or so he has been reporting to me.
But there is a bright spot in an otherwise dreary day!
Do you know about the catalogs that magically appear in your mailbox this time of year?
Yes! The Garden Catalogs…and the Seed Catalogs and the Hatchery Catalogs.
I guess I have to ignore the Hatchery Catalogs…living in the city you know.
I confess I am on mailing lists for a lot of catalogs (have been for years) ….and I look forward to every single one of them.
Flowers and pictures of flowers, have always brightened my day no matter how gloomy or snowy the weather is outside. I love imagining where I could plant new plants.
My dreams of a beautiful flower garden that looks just like the pictures in the catalogs never seem to materialize, but whatever I plant…I take great satisfaction in nurturing them to their fullest flowering capabilities.
I have always received a catalog from chicken hatcheries. This is a runoff from my days on the ranch in New Mexico and in Kansas and Missouri. I love raising chickens. And I especially love the fresh eggs that I would gather each day!
Since we live in the city now, our city codes are being challenged, as we speak…as many people would like to have a chicken or two for fresh eggs. I am among that group! But I am the only one in this family who wouldn’t mind caring for at least one laying hen.
On the ranch in New Mexico, I had about 15 laying hens. (You do not need a rooster to have eggs daily) My hens were free range and rewarded me daily with eggs. I sold the extra eggs, so the sales more than paid for the feed.
After breakfast this morning, I grabbed a few of my flower catalogs and my hot cup of tea. I am ready to make plans for a vegetable garden as well as adding in a few perennials.
Our temp here in Florida today is 72°, and I have already purchased a few plants from our local nursery. Dusty miller, petunias, schefflera, catnip, and tiger lilies, just to name a few. And I am anxious to get them in the ground. Some are annuals which are nice for lots of color.
I have been known to kill a plant or two when I lived in the MidWest….. but I am finding in Florida almost anything grows anywhere… at anytime.
Unfortunately, weeds are not among those that I have managed to destroy. And again the seasons in Florida that allow plants to flourish, …also allow weeds to flourish too. 🙁
So if you are feeling a little down due to the weather….grab your flower and seed catalogs! If you do not have any…look on line or visit your local nursery and plan to add a new plant to your garden this year. I promise you will look at it daily and feel satisfaction! All it takes is a little corner of your yard. 😉
Now if I could just have a laying hen….

Oh Sandy…you are a girl after my own heart!
I love picking green beans, snapping them too… and cooking them with a little salt pork or bacon!
I also enjoy pulling new potatoes from the moist earth…they always smell so good!
And when you pop those little Idaho white potatoes with peas that have been shelled…..joining them in a cream sauce….Wow! there is nothing better!

I remember my mom raising chickens to have fresh eggs every day. She sold both chickens and eggs when we were little.
Also, I remember my grandparents garden; both flowers and vegetables. I loved to pick peas and shell them, pick beans and snap them. It was fun. I didn’t enjoy weeding though. lol
