The Judge

  • The Judge….Movie Review…..

The Captain and I went to see this movie a couple weeks ago.

First allow me to give you a quick synopsis….
    The Judge4

A successful lawyer, Robert Downey Jr…. returns to his hometown for his mother’s funeral only to discover that his estranged father, the town’s judge, Robert Duvall, is suspected of murder.

Downey sets out to discover the truth and along the way reconnects with the family he walked away from years before.

Sounds simple?  And all too familiar….but a human story none-the-less.

I liked the way the characters bounced back and forth in an effort to correct a very dysfunctional family.
    The Judge8

The son wanting to please his father (the highly respected judge in a small town) and the disapproving father, highly critical of the type of clients his son defends.

Example: During a court recess in the big city…the opposing lawyer says to the Robert Downey Jr. character,(Hank Palmer)

“And how does it feel, Hank? Knowing that every client you represent is guilty?”

To which Hank Palmer responds: “It’s fine. Innocent people can’t afford me”.

There are plenty of legal entanglements as Hank  is forced to represent his father even though his father hires another attorney.

The charge? A possible vehicular homicide.
    The Judge7

The Judge tells his son…I would never allow you to represent me.
    The Judge.9pg

I also liked the Billy Bob Thornton character, Dwight Dickham…who was the prosecutor.
    The Judge5

He confronts Hank and his legal shark ways and says:

“You’re a shined up wooden nickel, Mr Palmer. A bully with a bag of tricks. But unlike you, I have one simple belief. That the law is the only thing that’s capable of making people equal. Now you may think that Mark Blackwell is white trash, and he may very well have been. But in the eyes of the state, his life matters. I’m going to impale your client on a first degree murder charge. And you get a front row seat.”

It is a touching and absorbing film, that will make you laugh and cry, and if you are a fan of either Robert Downey Jr or Robert Duvall you’ll love it.

    The Judge6

The Captain and I liked it a lot.

    Have you seen this movie?

    What are your thoughts?
