On the first day of Christmas…..yes, it is hard to believe that this is the first of December.
You see, the elves have been busily working overtime to get our home ready for Christmas and I have yet another vignette to show you.
This vignette involves a sled and ice skates, muff, and muffler…and of course there is a story to tell.
It was so much fun to set up this Christmas sled and ice skate vignette and the idea came to me when I stopped by a garage sale several months ago and right there in the middle of a table laden with odds and ends of baby clothes, a jack-in-the box toy and a couple of mismatched drinking glasses… was a pair of white ice skates.
It was a very hot Florida summer day and the humidity threatened to take one’s breath away and yet those white ice skates suddenly made me feel cooler as my fingers softly touched the blades of the skates that were looped together with long, white shoe strings.
I smiled at the thought of ice skates and frozen farm ponds so far from this tropical climate….although I am sure the ice skates were most likely used for indoor skating rinks.
But still…..my mind was racing with thoughts of skating and sledding and bundling up with mufflers and muffs.
I thought of the cold and snowy Midwest where I grew up. The big bon fires and roasting marshmallows and drinking hot cocoa and the laughter of friends and family having a great day skating on ponds and sledding down steep hills of snow.
I picked up the heavy ice skates by the shoe strings and I knew I had to have these scuffed white skates with the marked price of $10.00….. even though I had never ice skated a day of my life.
My skating was confined to roller skating only, but I certainly did my share of snow sledding, all bundled up with hat and gloves and snow boots!
In fact, as I gave the lady my payment money, I was remembering my grandmother and the beautiful fur muff she made me many years ago. It had a pretty ribbon that attached to both ends and if I took my hands out of the muff, the ribbon encircled my neck, holding my muff close to me. I loved that muff and wore it many, many times.
I entered my car, thankful for the cooling, conditioned air circling round about me while wishing for a snow sled and a muffler.
Sound crazy?
Maybe a little bit, but as soon as I got home I went on line searching for a sled. The Captain called me right in the middle of my search and asked casually…
“What are you doing?”
“I am on-line looking for a snow sled!”
You can imagine his laughter.
I did find a snow sled on Ebay and when the sled arrived…I felt the excitement of Ralphie, from the movie “The Christmas Story” when he unwrapped his Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle (or BB gun as we called them in those days).
My plan was coming together although I would have to wait to implement it, nearer to Christmas!
I also searched on line for a muff and was lucky to find a white one on Amazon that also had a white muffler thrown in to sweeten the deal.
I hot glued a bit of holly and berries to the muff and muffler to give them a festive Holiday look….. and then I sat down to wait for the first of December!
I decided to place the snow sled vignette next to the Hot Cocoa Bar that I had set up at the first chill of Autumn. If you missed that post…check it out here.
So my dear readers….it is like Christmas for me as I show you my vignette.
It is special for me, you know like the tiny little marshmallows that float to the top of my cup of hot cocoa….
….Or the Hallmark channel’s marathon of Christmas movies….
….Or the ooey-gooey taste of cherry as you bite down on a chocolate covered cherry from the Queen Anne Chocolate Covered Cherry Box.
I hope you enjoy this season as much as I do.
Let us all take time to enjoy the reason for the season.
Simple Joy!
Blessings to all!

Ah…my white, gently used, ice skates are still in Maine; and will probably never be worn again – by me. Melissa, my daughter has exactly the same footprint as I do. I’ll have to pass those along when I get home. Recently I gave her my LL Bean boots:)

Memories, huh Skylark? Don’t think you will need LL Bean Boots down here in Florida…unless you decide to go hiking or mountain climbing in some far remote place. Thanks for stopping by…hugs
