Before And After – Hall Bathroom Reveal Make-Over!

My dear readers…This the bathroom reveal/make-over.

My Hall Bathroom was sad, sad sad!

Very ordinary, very plain and just not pretty, as far as bathrooms go.

This bathroom reveal (make-over) was completed a couple years ago and it is still a favorite for me.

For those who missed it, here it is again.

It was very dull looking and now it “sparkles”!!!!

And I will show you in this bathroom reveal, how it went from being the wall flower sitting alone at the side of the hall to being the “star” of the Hallway!

 

 

The 3 photos below are the BEFORE pictures.  The first one is the way the room looked when we first bought the house.  The wall color was golden-yellow and it had a brown shower curtain.

The wall to ceiling white tiled shower surround was about the only good thing it had going for it.

It is hard to see, but the vanity countertop was a pale yellow.  

After a year, we painted the walls a sage green hoping it would lighten the space.  We also changed the faucet and shower curtain.

It helped a little, but not the change I was looking for as you can see in the pics below.

The yellow/beige counter-top and floor seemed to drag down any color on the walls.  

There was also a mirror on the side wall (see above pic) that housed a medicine cabinet.  I never really liked that, but managed to live with it for a few years. 

So I found a pale gray paint I liked, and I hoped that would satisfy my desire for a lighter, brighter bathroom. 

As you can see in the bathroom reveal, it is now a brighter space.  There is no window so the light has to come from the room itself or it can be very dull and dingy.

I painted the walls a very pale gray and I really like the neutral color.  In these pics, there are still a few finishing touches such as more towels, etc to this tiny room.

A for-sure addition will be replacing the knobs on the vanity with chrome to match the other fixtures… I have that on my “to do” list.  One of the best things we did is add the glass partition on the tub.  The room is so small that shower curtains just made the room appear even smaller.  The shower head is a rain shower so it does not splatter or spray water…the water just falls straight down like rain.  However, I do have to confess that no one uses this shower.  This Hall/Guest bathroom is usually used by guests as a powder room only.  Now, you may be asking how much money did we spend on this little make over.

I really wanted the faucet to be vintage….I found the next best thing.  I just love love love this faucet!  I think it goes perfectly with the small egg-shaped vessel sink.

I am sure many of you have seen some of those makeovers on HGTV …at least enough to know that a complete bathroom make over can be very expensive…having said that, I feel our cost was very reasonable.  The Captain and I had a budget, (don’t forget sweat equity)….but before I talk numbers of the cost of the make over, let me tell you a little of what we had to work with.  We were able to use the existing tub, the tub tile surround, the toilet, the vanity light, the vanity base, and a mirror from another part of the house.  

In addition to re-painting the whole bathroom. we added beadboard, a medicine cabinet above the toilet, marble vanity top, towel bar, TP holder and towel ring, a vessel sink and faucet.  

So drum roll please…we were able to keep the cost under $900.00!  

The most expensive items were the glass shower partition and the marble counter top, which we found locally. (I would love to put bamboo flooring like we have in the master bedroom, pool bath and office, but that was not in the budget at this time) 😉

Even though the room is very small, I felt it needed a little more character, so we added the wood medicine cabinet and I am very pleased with that.  It allowed me to bring colors from the large flower painting (brown branches) over to the opposite wall, by adding a brownish toned picture that I had hanging in the hall way.  The saying on the picture is the Serenity Prayer. I repainted the frame from an Oak to white and placed it on the top of the cabinet. (more on that later)

We bought the medicine cabinet at Lowe’s (on sale) and the beadboard at Home Depot. The sink, faucet and other hardware, I purchased on-line and managed to get free shipping. The great thing about on-line shopping is “choices”…I am able to find just the right faucet without running in and out of stores, which just wears me out these days. I let my fingers do the walking!

I have  set out a few things on the vanity …still “living” with it to get a feel of what I might add.  I have a small white planting pot with fresh herbs that I have been “eying” out in the Secret Garden.  Don’t be surprised if that little pot doesn’t end up in the corner behind the faucet. 🙂

 

 

The Captain added the shelves and towel rack at the end of the tub.  I wanted the bathroom to have a Hotel feel with plush white towels.

The Serenity Prayer picture was a great shopping short-cut that I like to use.  It is called Shopping your home!

All I did was paint the frame with chalk paint and waah-laaah!…I have a different picture!

Have you ever shopped your home? You might find something to re-finish and you have a brand new “something” and it doesn’t cost a dime. The Serenity Prayer picture and the oval mirror that used to be above my entry table in our other house, are good examples of shopping my home.  It makes you feel like you have a brand new item and makes it fresh again.  

You see, I repainted the mirror from the dark, espresso color with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, Old White… that I had left over from a hutch I repainted for one of our Flip houses.  I also repainted the existing vanity light fixture framework as I liked the scrolls surrounding the 3 lights.  When painting the ceiling, I removed the yellowing vent cover and grabbed a can of white spray paint!! Easy peasy.

And don’t worry if all the whites don’t match!

That is what makes it interesting…the various shades.

I partnered with Sherwin Williams paint for the walls, beadboard and ceiling and I used the top of the line, Emerald paint.  It goes on so easily and covers well.  Just like “butta”….although, I did use two coats of paint.
