Memorial Day Week-end!
Memorial Day Week-end is a time to kick off the summer fun, but it is also a very important time to remember family and friends who have passed away and also all the men and women who have served in our Military and are currently serving!
Growing up, our family would pick flowers in the early morning hours (from our roses, peonies and other flowers in our gardens) and make bouquets to take to the various cemeteries where our loved ones were laid to rest.
Many times we used Mason Jars for vases and we would tie pretty ribbons around their girth and after Memorial Day we would go back to the cemeteries and pick up all the containers we had so lovingly placed at each grave-site.
Now, many people are painting their Mason Jars and it makes for a very pretty arrangement. I have these various shades of pink Mason jars in my Utility Room…and they are lovely!…just a thought for sprucing up your Memorial Day Flower Bouquet. 😉
Actually, the jars are pretty easy to paint. All you need is a sponge paint brush and paint! Some crafters add a few drops of Dawn dish soap to their paint.
I actually have a project that I want to do soon which is to paint various candlestick holders! I will be providing a “how to” on my progress in a later post! 🙂
For the young baby (sister) we lost, we used a special little vase shaped like a lamb. We inserted white spirea spires (which lay lazily over parts of the little lamb) and clusters of miniature pink roses.
It was always a solemn day… as well as a joyous day.
Joyous, because we would all get together for a family picnic later in the afternoon… which always included cranking home made ice cream!
This year will be no different!
The Captain and I will be cranking home made ice cream….:)
We had to replace the old green freezer about 10 years ago with the brown one above. ;(
Ok,… the Captain will be cranking the old White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer on Monday afternoon…. but I will be supervising! That is what I do best! 🙂
….and then he will pack it with salt and ice and top it with old towels we use for just this purpose! (The Ice Cream ripens when it is “packed”. )
And then we will have a few friends over and we will eat a picnic meal that is a great make-ahead.
Instead of regular hamburgers, I will make loose meat on a bun, which is sort of like a sloppy joe without the tomato-ey or Bar-B-Q Sauce! I will serve these direct from the crock pot (easy peasy) on a ciabatta bun!
I like to use ciabatta as there is not as much sugar as a regular hamburger bun or roll.
The Menu is printed out below ….and the recipes and pics will follow in the next post!!
Our plans are really no plans….
And after eating (or before), we will swim, visit and/or reflect!
What are your plans for the Memorial Week-end Holiday?
Whatever you do,
please do it safely!
