And the Fashion Winner is….
First a confession.
I am really not into all the awards shows that literally dominate the television screen this time of year.
You know, like The Golden Globes, The Grammys, The Emmys and The Oscars!
Don’t get me wrong, the Captain and I do like movies and we go to see a lot of them during the year.
However, the movie critics and I just don’t seem to agree on what is a good movie and what is not.
And that is ok.
But I do have a confession to make!
I am certainly not a fashionista and I do not own a fancy gown that one would wear to one of these award events.
But I do like looking at them.
On other people. 🙂
And yes, I confess…..I do judge the gowns by my standards of likes and dislikes, just as I “judge” sports players by their abilities, etc.
It is what we do best….
….we, the arm chair quarterbacks and fashionistas sitting smugly watching our televisions, snacking on popcorn and offering unsolicited opinions!
And it is probably a good thing that our opinions really do not count, but it gives us something to talk about.
Another confession? I don’t really know who won awards at the Golden Globes.
Why?
Because I didn’t watch the actual Golden Globes Awards.
I only watched the red carpet entrance of a few of the “celebrities” because I wanted to see what they were wearing and the opening and that was it.
But lets get on with a few pics of the gowns that I thought were pretty and a few that I termed…WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?
First, I want to show the attire of a few of the married couples who have managed to stay married in the glitz of Tinseltown.
John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston
Annette Bening and husband Warren Beatty
Matt Damon and wife Luciana Barroso
Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn
Natalie Portman and husband Benjamin Millepied
Keith Urban and wife Nicole Kidman
Ryan Reynolds and wife Blake Lively
Chrissy Teigan and husband John Legend
Drum roll please…My favorite gown was this one, worn by Reese Witherspoon!
I have always loved yellow and I really liked the way this gown looked glam and classy in my opinion.
(Note: I would never wear it but on her, it looks great!)
Now for the gowns in the category of: What Were They Thinking?
Seriously, didn’t a husband or friend say something like…you might want to rethink that choice, it is not your most flattering.
This view of the dress isn’t too bad, but when she did a twirl around, Sarah Jessica Parker looked like she was in a big white taffata balloon with yards and yards of excess material. And her hair seemed to be channeling Princess Leia of Star Wars or Heidi in the Swiss mountains.
Speaking of excess material, this dress worn by Zoe Saldana has too much flouncy material…in fact I have a bed duvet in white that looks a lot like this dress.
There are no words to describe this dress worn by Sophie Turner, I will let this dress speak for itself.
Hailee Steinfeld wore one of those cut out sleeves that seemed popular for the award show, but it looked like something thrown together at the last minute and instead of the extra material covering her bosoms, she added it to the skirt part of the dress.
I think Jessica Chastain not only ran out of material for the bodice of her dress, she ran out of the glittery flowers and rain drops. She could have kept the rain drops but left the flowers in a vase.
I don’t know if Kerry Washington got a girl scout badge for marking her black undergarments in this see through dress but it just isn’t working for me. The armor looking shoulder “caps” look like she is going in for a battle.
This gown of Heidi Klum’s is awful. Either she had black garland left over from Halloween that she pasted on a white dress or she wanted people to play a game of “how to get through the maze” on her dress. I don’t really want to know what the reward is.
This dress worn by Michelle Williams reminds me of a tablecloth my grandmother once had. Plus, I don’t like the way this dress sports a giant bow across her bust. And the little black ribbon at her neck? What is with that?
Drew Barrymore, what can I say? It is another of those cut out sleeves frocks with a deep plunging to the navel. I think the idea is to not reveal baggy arms which is probably something I should look into. Hair looks good.
Janelle Monae’s dress has a cute top to match her 60’s updo hair….the ballerina flounce with polka dots, not so much. Not sure what is going on with her legs, but when I was a little girl, I used to stand that way when I had to go to the bathroom really bad.
Ok, the palm trees across the bottom hem of the dress do not match the “stuff” at the bodice of this dress. Really Felicity Jones, don’t listen to your grandmother…for this particular dress….less is more.
Now we go from one extreme to another. Too much skin showing or in these cases, too much of the chest area. I don’t think it is attractive when all you see is chest and I am not talking about the bosoms. I’m talking about neck bone, breast bone and navel.
Jessica Biel has a lot going on with this dress at the bottom. ie; black belt, grapes and flowers on her hip, and a slit up to there…and lots of excess material that could have been put to better use on the bodice area.
This sequined black dress worn by Kristen Bell is lovely if it were not for the missing material above her waist.
As is this caped crusader dress worn by Mandy Moore. I am just not liking the slits down to the waist line with so much of the chest skin showing.
I really like this black sequined dress worn by Amy Adams.
There were many many more beautiful dresses that were hits and a lot of misses too, which is usual when Hollywood celebrates their accomplishments.
The take-a-way I have is that now we know why there are fashion designers on every movie set…. to dress these talented people.
Some of them do not know how to dress themselves.
Of course this is only my opinion…..
as I type this with my curly red hair piled on top of my head in a messy bun, dressed in a pair of black capri pants, a hot pink multi-colored flowered blouse (with flouncy sleeves) and my shoes? Black sketchers with purple and silver logo design.
Do you watch the award shows and do you like looking at the beautiful gowns?
Have a great day!

Hi Kari,
I don’t watch the awards shows and I don’t actually go to the theater to see movies; but I really liked you commentary on these dresses. I agree that the cut out shoulders just doesn’t fly for me. I did, of course, see Meryl Streep’s speech.
Best to you. Missed you at the luncheon yesterday.

Thanks for stopping by…and for your comments. Some of those gowns are amazing and some of them? Well, it is their choice, and it is a good thing we don’t all think alike.
