Christmas 2025 The Reason For The Season
The Winter Holiday is one of the most important times of the year. Christmas 2025 The Reason For The Season! Doesn’t it bring to mind all the wonderful sights and sounds of Christmas? I have often thought about how Christmas was celebrated in Colonial times and of course we have a lot of history to give us more details.
My tablescape today makes me think of Colonial times because I used a red and green plaid with accents of Pewter. By the way, EVERYTHING on this table has been in my ‘stash’ for over 10 years and with some of the Pewter pieces originally coming from EBAY, they are most likely much older! My source list is at the bottom of this post.

I love plaid, and the tartan dinner plates and dessert plates give off a very rustic, perhaps Hunter/Tavern kind of vibe to me. By using a table runner, the wood table is reminiscent of perhaps a tavern. For the centerpiece, I sat the lantern on a plaid table runner and placed greenery in and among the stags.
I used pewter colored stags…or you can call them deer. I think stag relates more to the tavern thing I have going on. Then on each side of a rustic pewter- looking lantern, I paired them with antler sheds.
The Plate Stack
The plaid dinner plates are Pacific Rim and I love the green that runs through the red plaid pattern. The plaid dinner plates are sitting on rustic/woodsy rattan chargers which I sat on chippy white chargers. I felt the glimpse of white warms up the table. Topping the dinner plate is a red and white salad plate. I added the matching Pacific Rim plaid dessert plate and finally added a soup tureen shaped like an acorn in warm brown tones. ( I love the 4 different scenes on the Heritage salad plates, which I purchased so many years ago.)

The bunny and Christmas tree…

The fawn and cardinal…

Santa with sleigh/reindeer and little foxes…

The woody station wagon with tree on top…
Wait! What??? Ok, the woody car probably shouldn’t be on this particular “Colonial” tablescape, but I couldn’t resist putting it on the table., plus it came with the set.

The flatware is silver twig/stick looking and the plaid napkins are secured with silver deer napkin rings found here. Aren’t they cute? The ruby water glasses will be used for wine.
The below pic was taken in the evening to show the lantern lit up and probably more indicative of a tavern like feel of very little natural light.
I actually prefer this tablescape with just the lit lantern.

Adding to the feel of Colonial tavern, I like the look of the pewter mugs with the ivory colored glass inserts. Pine cones and brown and cream Christmas ornaments compliment the rustic look.

….. and there is something warm and cozy about the Pewter bread tray, even though it sports (pun intended) pine cones instead of bread. How could one not love that?

Lastly, I placed a Charley Brown Christmas tree (sad tree with one red ornament) on the table. The little tree base is wrapped in a piece of red & green plaid fabric. (I always set out a Charley Brown Tree, just as we always watch a Charley Brown Christmas, along with all our favorite Christmas movies during the Holiday season.) The Captain is very sentimental especially during the Winter Holiday
According to EBAY, my pewter pieces were cast at an 1892 foundry along the Susquehanna River called Susquehanna Castings in Pennsylvania. However, I really was not interested in them for that reason. You see, the Captain’s mother collected pewter pieces and it brings back fond memories for him and that is good enough for me to have made that EBAY purchase 10 years ago.
With my romantic imagination, I can picture Williamsburg colonials bursting into a tavern after hunting for food….proudly displaying their catch of pheasants or grouse slung over their shoulders and being served ale in pewter tankards! Oh, and no! I would not necessarily welcome the Captain along with his hunting catch of fowl in my dining room, 🥴….but remember, I am the eternal romanticist and can overlook the negative side to this scenario.🥰

Just imagine a tavern full of robust hunters drinking out of those “cute” little pewter cups with ivory inserts, and sitting down to a meal served on those tartan plates. Perhaps even Paul Revere, who is best known for his midnight ride….. I don’t remember all of the poem, although I believe I memorized it in school but it went something like this:
Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm.
Oops! I did a “Wiki” on Mr. Revere and…” Paul Revere was an American silversmith, engraver, and a Patriot in the American Revolution. He was born in 1735 and died in 1818″…, so my pewter apparently came long after,….. like 75-100 years after his historic ride. Oh well! But that is what comes to my mind when I think of pewter pieces, etc.

Of course now we are back to the Reason for the Season. Remember the reason for the season, which is Christ the Lord, who come into this world to save us all: For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
For Christians, Jesus is our hope and consolation even in this time of confusion and frustration. So let us find ways to show His love to each other. For example, cookies can be dropped off at doorsteps or better yet, we can take a few minutes and visit with those that are alone. Winter Holidays can be a difficult time for lonely people. Perhaps a smile while we are out shopping or running our errands. Smiles are contagious my friends, especially for those who are tending our purchases or serving us lunch. With our support, organizations can provide food for those who lack it, if you are able, please donate when and what you can. This season can be special if suffused with love.
Merry Christmas to you all.

Beautifull, Kari! You & I were definitely channeling that tavern or lodge-like theme, and so I undoubtedly love all the elements you’ve used on this tabletop. I even have several, some similar, some exact (the BH&G Heritage tree and car motifs). I love the sentimentality in why you made certain purchases, and I also adore the historical fiction created around it all. We’ve actually dined in Gadsby’s Tavern in Old Town Alexandria, where George Washington and many other statesmen of the Revolutionary Period dined. It’s an immersive experience, imagining the folks of those days, just as you’ve created here with yours. And, of course, Jesus is the reason for our season. May yours be blessed with His grace. Thank you for participating today and sharing your talent and faith! On a completely different note, may we both enjoy our team’s season of basketball play!
Kari, I am giddy from all the plaid!! I love all the tartan with the pewter pieces, it does give off that colonial cozy cabin feel! Your heritage plates are adorable- love that woody wagon. The deer napkin rings and twig flatware were a nice choice as well. I hope you have a very blessed and merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year. ❤️ 🎄
Patti, I enjoyed traveling back in time to sit with you in your Colonial tavern! I love the red plaids against the warm wood of the table and the rattan chargers. I’ve always loved pewter, though I only have candlesticks made from it (and vintage hammered aluminum which goes well with it). The stags and antler sheds are perfect additions to the cozy, rustic vibe as is the twig flatware. Loved the photo with only the lantern lit. Happy Holidays!
Thanks Sandra…for your comments on my table setting…I like to venture off with various colors for the Holiday but there is something about traditional colors such as red and green that draw me back to my childhood and the Christmas colors my mother always used. Have a great and wonderful Holiday Season.
Kari, I love this table with your plaid and pewter and all the history behind it. Who doesn’t love a good tartan plaid – especially at Christmas. Your centerpiece is gorgeous with the lantern, stags, antler sheds, and frosted greenery. I love all the layers, textures, and patterns in your plate stack, topped by those adorable acorn soup tureens. Those heritage plates (BH&G??) are darling and always evoke a sense of nostalgia. Love the pewter mugs and twig flatware too. I hope you have a lovely meal at this beautiful table, and wishing you a merry December and a joyous holiday season!
Kim you are so kind and I appreciate your sentiments on my table setting. I find myself more nostalgic these days in regards to the Holidays. Perhaps it is a “getting older” trait as I noticed the same thing about my mother when I was busy being ‘busy’ in my child rearing days. I now believe it is a time of reflection. Have a wonderful and Happy December with your loved ones.🎄❤️🎄
I love the plaid on your table! I also love all the reds, and your plates are all different and so sweet. What a cute set for celebrating the season. Merry Christmas!
Ricki thank you for stopping by…my prayers are with you and your family. Sometimes it is hard to celebrate the Season when someone we love is ill…God has said He will never leave us in our time of need and I am living proof of that. Please know that I care. Philippians 4:13 🎄🙏🏻❤️
Your pewter pieces are wonderful — and would be even if they didn’t have such a long history. I’m so very fond of tartan and you used it so beautifully in this table setting. Sigh. I love this season so much!
Thank you Jeanie, I love when I come across a hidden gem in my stash…I feel like a kid again opening a new toy…I had almost….yep I said almost forgotten I had the pewter pieces til my daughter came to visit and helped me tidy up one of my dish closets. I can’t help it, things like this bring me joy. And you, my new-ish friend, bring me joy when I am reading your thoughts and seeing your art…thank you. Blessings and Christmas Season Greetings to you and Rick. 🎄❤️🎄
Kari, I love your tartan Tablescape with the warmth of your wood table. You imagined exactly how I would have thought it would have been back then. The pewter pieces are fabulous as are all the details you have included! As gorgeous as it all is, I am thrilled that you shared the “reason for the season” my friend. Without the birth of Jesus Christ, there would be no Christmas! May you and the Captain have a joyous Christmas❤️
My sweet and dear Pam…you (and Butch) are such a Blessing to us all. You know how much we love to ‘play’ with our dishes and for me it makes the Holiday Season a bit more special when we have a pretty and sometimes nostalgic table to sit around with family and friends as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior. And our grands…what a joy to watch their faces light up as they open their gifts. That always makes me think of the little drummer boy and his ‘gift’…. “Shall I play for you, Pa rum pum pum pum. On my drum?”
Hugs and Blessings
I’m mad for plaid so I love all your tartan Kari! From the plaid plate layers, table runner, lantern, deer and pewter pieces that harken to Colonial times, you’ve created a warm and welcoming table. I have a set of those Heritage salad plates that are so festive and I so miss Pier 1 for all their tableware and décor. As always, it’s a treat to hop with you and join you at the table. Wishing you a Merry December and joyous Christmas celebrating the Reason for the Season! 🎄❤️
Thank you Mary…quite a few of us bought those plates. They were still available for a long time…not sure if they are now though. I miss Pier 1 as they always had such a wonderful selection of dinnerware, napkins and rings… AND I loved the aroma reeds. I still have some of the pretty bottles that I have re-used. Have a wonderful December and a holly, jolly Christmas!🎄🥰🎄
This just makes me so happy, Kari, since it brings up memories of my honeymoon in Williamsburg. I fell in love with pewter back then. Your plaid runner and your plaid plates look so perfect for Christmas. I love those mugs! Your lantern and the twiggy flatware (I miss Pier 1) are beautiful on your table. Thank you for including the beautiful verses and Happy December ❤️
Hi Sweet Kitty….so glad you stopped by and thank you. I love Pewter and I loved Williamsburg…so glad for your memories of your honeymoon, what a beautiful place to go. Yes, I miss Pier 1 too…Is it just us or do others feel some of our favorite stores are gone, never to return again….which leaves a void in our lives. The Captain was saying the other day how he missed one of our favorite restaurants that closed about a year ago…and we were both a bit melancholy knowing it would never return again. BUT there is now a new restaurant in it’s place…so life goes on. Have a Blessed Christmas…I know your family will see to that. 🎄🥰❤️
Sweet friend, your sentiment about the true meaning of Christmas is beautiful as well as your lovely table. It has all the feels of Christmas with the plaid runner and napkins, stately deer, and Christmas plates. I have a big stack of those same plates that I collected several years ago. I was drawn in particular to the ones with the red barn because they reminded me of my grandparents’ farm. I have so enjoyed my visit today. Merry Christmas!
Shannon, thank you for stopping by and I love those Heritage plates too. I’m not sure but they seemed to be available for quite a few years and I know several of our blogger friends who have them. I agree with you and the memories they invoke. I used to tease my Mom when she kept longing for the ‘good ole days’. but now I am feeling the same way…as I remember all the times with my grandparents on their farm. Grandpa’s garden was necessary as were the livestock…it was called survival and though it could be ‘lean’ we always had enough to share with family and friends. Sigh…yep, the good ole days. Have a Blessed Christmas and enjoy your family this beautiful Holiday Season.🎄❤️🙏🏻
You had me at hello. I love tartan plaid everything.
Your table was very reminiscent of a pub or English tavern. The pewter and lantern, along with your plate stack, are absolutely gorgeous!
And yes, Jesus is the Reason for the Season!
Merry December!
Nancy, I love Tartan Plaid too. It is just so Christmasy (is there such a word?). Anyway, I do appreciate you stopping by and I hope you are resting so you will be “rearing to go” come Christmas. Christmas Blessings to you and Sweet Man
Oh, Kari, this is one of my favorites. It’s getting me into the Christmas mood. One plate I loved so much was the one with the deer and the cardinal, but really I loved all of it. But actually I couldn’t see the colonists drinking out of small cups, but huge mugs. lol
Merry Christmas!
Sandy
You are most likely right Sandy…they were hearty drinkers and the smaller mugs would be only a small taste. LOL. Thank you dear one…I so appreciate you and your faithfulness to my blog posts. What is happening to our Chiefs? Hugs to you and Ron.
I don’t know what’s happening to our Chiefs. I feel so sorry for them. Look what happened to Jayhawks.
Hugs back, Kari.
I know! I watched them both crash and burn. I hope Peterson can start playing with the Jayhawks???? And perhaps both teams can still salvage their seasons.
Kari, such a delightful table with great history. I have enjoyed looking at your pewterware. I can envision old colonial times with these vintage pieces. The tartan is so pretty with your lovely plate stack. I love the plaid! The table runner looks lovely with your pewer colored stags, lantern and greenery. The heritage salad plates are so perfect. The twig flatware is wonderful. Such cute deer napkin rings. The centerpiece with your pewter bread tray is so pretty and festive. Always a pleasure joining you at the table. Christmas blessings.
Linda I feel Christmas is coming so fast this year but perhaps it is just that I am getting older because if I recall, Christmas has always come right behind Thanksgiving…at least that is what my calendar has always indicated. LOL. Seriously, thank you for your kind comments and for stopping by. Have a wonderful December and glorious Christmas.
Table centerpieces seem to be the bane of my existence, and you have given me a great idea here with the lantern, flanked by reindeer on either side. I have a lantern similar to that, and I have reindeer, so I may do some version of this at some point during the holidays because I absolutely love it! I also like your reindeer napkin rings. I have the same acorn bowls that you do, and I always enjoy getting them out in the fall. It’s been such fun looking at all of the beautiful tables today. I feel so inspired
Pattie, I also have the large acorn soup tureen but they are usually stacked/packed behind something else and I forget I have them. 🥴. So when I do dig them out…it is almost like seeing them for the first time. Thanks for stopping by.
I really enjoyed a visit to Colonial times through your tablescape, Kari. The red and green theme with lantern accents is perfect for the season. Seeing all the pewter and references to Williamsburg brought back so many memories of past visits. I especially liked your special Christmas plates and their depiction of Christmas Past. You can never go wrong with plaid as your foundation. Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas.
Lynne, Thrifting Wonderland
Thanks Lynne…sometimes I think I would like to have lived in that era and then…..sometimes I don’t. Happy December and thanks for stopping by
Love this tablesetting with the plaids and pewterware and especially in the glow of the lantern. It feels so inviting. Both the Susquehanna Castings and the beginnings of Pfaltzgraff were just a hop and skip from our house, but I never ended up collecting pewter items. Now I wish I had. Chuckled at your woody car and silversmith Revere remarks.
Will be staying up tonight. A win could certainly move the Jayhawks way up in the standings.
Thanks Jan for stopping by…and for your kind tablescape comments.
I hear you on the Jayhawks…we did move up to 21st after dropping out of the top 25. Yikes! I couldn’t believe we did that. We will be watching the game tonight with UConn…still not sure if Darryn Peterson will play…but love that Tre White and Flory Bidunga have stepped up. Rock Chalk Jayhawks! 🎄🏀
Kari, your festive plaid table and reindeer accents are so charming! I adore colonial pewter and you have inspired me to use it more often. Wishing you a joyful Christmas season, Cecilia My Thrift Store Addiction
Thanks Cecilia…I love Pewter too and should use it more often as well. I seem to forget about it. Have a great Christmas and enjoy the Season.🎄
My Mom collected pewter in our “colonial style kitchen”. she had that Daily Bread plate – thanks for bringing that memory back to me! I love all of the plaids on your table and the scenes on your dishes are so cute! I wish you a happy and peaceful month ahead!
Oh Patti don’t you just love when something triggers our memories? Perhaps it is old age but I am finding that happening more and more these days. I love when it makes me smile…I appreciate so much more. Hugs and Have a Blessed Christmas Season.🎄
