For those of you who are movie buffs….you will know that the line … ‘Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner…!’, was said by actor Patrick Swayze in the movie “Dirty Dancing”. He of course, was referring to his girlfriend, whose name was “Baby” and he was simply emphasizing that no one should be ignored.
That is how my spur of the moment week-end trip
from Florida to Kansas City began.
And Grand daughter #3.
Usually my grand daughter works 6 days a week,
so when a family group planned a trip to Kansas City
to watch the Royals Baseball game…they assumed she
would be working and couldn’t attend with them.
Tickets were bought and plans were made way in advance of the game and it wasn’t until the Thursday before the Saturday game that a sweet little text appeared on my phone.
For a little background, my daughter, grand daughter #3 and I watch every single Royals game from our respective homes in Salina, Kansas – Olathe, Kansas and of course Cape Coral, Florida! AND we text each other through the whole game…almost every pitch and hit is discussed. It is our only “vice”.
The three of us were texting our usual comments regarding game play and the subject came up that a group of family were going to the Saturday game, but that grand daughter #3 didn’t have a ticket or anyone to go with because by this time….tickets would be hard to come by, let alone being able to have a whole group sit together even in the same section.
The text:
“I’m trying to find someone to go w me 🙁 . Will u fly to kc Gma?!
It was one of those requests that was full of hope…still….. knowing that because of distance and last minute everything….one day before the game, the request was most likely not probable.
What is a grandmother to do?
She hands over all the detailing to the Captain and he arranges flights (frequent flyer miles) and luxury hotel (Crown Plaza downtown on points) and Royals tickets, 10 rows up from the field for perfect viewing….close up and personal…(yes, that one the only out of pocket expense)!
When I told grand daughter # 3 that she would be spending the week-end with me in the hotel, enjoying room service and valet service, she was ecstatic.
I was going to rent a car too, but grand daughter #3 insisted that she would provide the transportation.
Everything worked out so beautifully and when the three of us (My daughter, grand daughter#3 and I)… linked up our arms like the three musketeers and walked into Kauffman stadium…I have to admit I was a bit teary eyed. I think the pic below expresses how we felt to be actually at the game. We have all attend games at various times, but this game was special because the three of us were together and didn’t have to text our opinions. 🙂
I had bought a new baseball and I gave it to Grand daughter #3 and I told her she could get it autographed if she wanted. She was able to walk a few steps to where the players were signing autographs and third baseman Chesslor Cuthbert signed it for her.
I couldn’t leave out great grandson…so I got him a ball that had been used in the previous game. The pic below is at the “K” where I am trying to get great grandson to look at the ball I got him. He is looking at the baseball players warming up.
The week-end was a whirl wind as I was able to catch a baseball game of another great grandchild (aren’t extended families fun?) and even though I was only able to be there for part of his game, I got to see him hit several balls and play shortstop! Whoopee! He is 7.
There was a lunch before the Royals game at T-Rex at Legends which we got to share with more family.
This is our 2 year old great grandson, his mommy, (grand daughter #2), her husband, and his two boys.
Great grandson looked up from his coloring to pose for this pic. I know I am prejudiced…but isn’t he adorable?
Grand daughter #2 with husband, looking at the pics we were all taking and sending around. (By the way, grand daughter #2 is having another baby in February! Can’t wait!)
Later, Big brother was busy watching the game!
This pic was Twin #1, Grand daughter #3 and I… having lunch just before my flight home on Sunday evening.
As I was getting ready to board my plane at MCI…I received the cutest little video of the sweet voice of another great grand daughter (she is 4) saying to have a safe trip GiGi and that she loved me. When I was watching her big brother hit balls for his team, she collected beautiful yellow dandelions for me. 🙂
All in all such a fun and wonderful week-end.
Sometimes the unplanned and playing it by ear is the way to go.
I am so blessed to have such a wonderful family!
And as for “Baby”?….I don’t think my grand daughter #3 felt ignored at all!
AND here is the topper. As I was flying out of Kansas City Sunday evening…the Captain (on duty) was flying in. He stayed at the hotel across the street from the Crown Plaza Hotel and was able to have breakfast with Twin #1 at the same cafe that grand daughter #3 and I had breakfast!
A perfect ending to a perfect week-end, wouldn’t you say?

Oh Kari, I was at the Saturday Royals game with my stepson, Mike. It was a wonderful day. I felt so bad for the Royals losing, but I had a wonderful time with Mike.
