Boring you with Butterflies!
Dear friends,. seeing the sweet post from Nancy@ Two Trails One Road... with her mothering of monarch butterflies reminded me of my post in June of 2015 and the updated post of 2024, which is also linked below with even more detailed photos of the metamorphosis process of the black swallowtail butterfly and my parsley herb garden. Let’s continue….
I am sorry my friends if I am boring you with butterflies!
You see, when the Captain and I married…we had this Indian poem printed on the back of our wedding programs. For those of my dear friends who attended our wedding…I am sure they will see my connection to butterflies.
So if I may….I will give you my Black Swallowtail Butterflies Update!
The metamorphosis has begun as the caterpillars have/are going from being caterpillars to cocoons to beautiful butterflies!

I have previously shared some of the pics with you (click the link below which will show the caterpillar and egg process) and as each beautiful black swallowtail butterfly emerges, I get so excited! The link is below titled “Giving up on Parsley”.

So far there have been four butterflies (that I know of) and this morning there was another, still wet with it’s little legs clinging to the parsley plant stems….(they have been decimating the leaves for the last few weeks)….but that is ok! This is exciting!

In all my years, I have not been able to witness the complete process as I have here in my Secret Garden!
From egg laying to the pupa stage and to the butterfly literally spreading it’s damp wings, gaining strength and preparing to fly away.
I just wanted to share the journey with you…and the takeaway which is a parallel to Jesus.
Butterfly StageMeaning in Christ’s Life:
The Caterpillar: Represents Christ’s earthly life and human birth. Jesus was born in mortal flesh, bound to the earth, walking among humans in humility.
The Chrysalis / Cocoon: Represents Christ’s death and burial. The caterpillar retreats into a dark, seemingly lifeless tomb, mirroring Jesus being placed in the grave.
The Butterfly: Represents Christ’s Resurrection. He breaks free from the restrictions of death and the tomb, emerging in a glorious, immortal, and celestial body.

I am proud to say that all the caterpillars that were in our garden are in chrysalis stage. 10-12 days we will have Monarchs!

Kari, butterflies are never boring. I love them. I went in read your parsley blog and really enjoyed.
Also, I noticed Ann Diles posted on here. We used to stay in touch with her and Ed, and even after Ed died, but then she moved and we lost touch with her. I hope she is still okay.

Sandy, I haven’t talked to Annie for awhile but she moved from KC along with Diane and her hubby and they live closer to Jane, her sister. Actually they all came down here a few years ago on their way to Key West and we had a lovely time visiting and catching up. We try to exchange Christmas Cards. I try to keep in touch with several from the base. Pat H, Laura D, Delores H, and a few others.

What a fun post! Kari, we love our butterflies too. We have had a lot more different kinds of butterflies this year here in California- monarchs, swallowtails, little whites and some bright bright yellow ones to name a few. It’s always a delight to watch them. This past weekend we were at a neighbor for dinner and she, too, has given up on her parsley as there are caterpillars in it currently!

Kari, this is such a timely post along with the link to Nancy@ Two Trails One Road. Just yesterday while I was checking out butterfly houses, my husband was ordering milkweed seed in hopes to attract more butterflies next year. Great documentation of this miracle right in your secret garden.
We too will be watching the Border Showdown on Friday.
Oh yes Jan…Friday is the day…I did see the top 25 and I don’t know how they can do that so early…the season hasn’t really started! No matter if it is football, basketball or whatever.
I just love butterflies and they are here for such a short time. I hope you are keeping cool…it is raining here right now…I love hearing it, don’t like the lightening that sometimes comes with.

That one is such a beauty. What a beautiful miracle it would be to see these butterfly caterpillars emerge. I so wish you could have seen the process complete — and you know what? Maybe one day you will. These photos are terrific. It’s sometimes hard to catch them, the flit by so quickly. Yours were posing just for you!
Oh Jeanie I did get to be a part of the whole process…I included the link up above to “Giving up on parsley” which was the original post that shows the eggs, the chrysalis, (pupa) and then finally the emerging of the butterfly, all while at each stage they munched on my parsley. such a shame you didn’t have a little one around to show the amazing cycle… but I’m sure you have in the past 🙂 To be able to share the marvel of the “circle of life” is a joy.
Recently I’ve shared the “discovering” of hazel nuts (cob nuts) with little squirrel tooth marks (unfortunately grey squirrels) and the few that have sprouted that were buried from last year…
I’m going to be visiting a butterfly “Farm” in Costa Rica in November… and will be thinking of you and your love of butterflies.

Yes, it is so rewarding when sharing with a little one isn’t it my friend. While living on the ranch, we shared birthing of cattle and horses, as well as poultry of all kinds. I think the peacocks were a marvel to my grandchildren as they were shocked to see the size of a peacock egg. 😉 I think that is why I enjoy the Holidays so much…looking through the eyes of a child kinda makes me one too.
