Pentas, Dick…the plant is called Pentas! Some of you may or may not have heard of Pentas; I took the pic below of one of my flowering bushes to show you what it looks like if you have not seen it before.
“When other plants fade in Florida’s hot and humid summers, perennials like Pentas lanceolata truly shine. These attractive plants produce red, pink, or white flowers throughout the summer and are a great source of food for hummingbirds and butterflies.” So sayeth the University of Florida!

The Amaryllis in the pic below was a gift from Donna and Dick who were at our Christmas Open House. When Donna handed me the beautiful plant, it was still in bud form. Thank you again Donna! You can see that it is flourishing! Back to the Pentas!
At our Christmas Open House on Dec 22nd….there were people wandering in and out of our Secret Garden, Home and Lanai as we snacked on goodies and drank Wassail, enjoying each new visitor …. catching up with the happenings of each and everyone. In Florida, one can open up all sliders so the house and the outside areas become extended rooms.
The Captain and Dick were touring our Secret Garden and all the plantings. Suddenly, the Captain called out to me from the doorway…”honey, what is the name of this plant?” as I juggled candy and cookie platers and conversations with about 12 different people!
I called back, (probably in the ear of one of my guests…Sorry!) “Which one?”
At that point, the Captain disappeared for a few minutes only to return and call out again…from the doorway…”the pink one, no the white one!”
“Night Jasmine!” I called while dipping wassail for a newly arrived guest. Suddenly my thoughts cleared and told me that the Jasmine usually blooms at night and it was 5:00 pm! “No, not the Jasmine!” I called trying not to spill the red, warm liquid I was ladling into a cup….but the Captain had disappeared into the garden with my erroneous information.
Later, after all the tables cleared and the last guest gone and the Captain and I had retired for the night…I sat straight up in bed and said…”Pentas”!
The Captain mumbled something that sounded like “what did you say?”
“Pentas!” I repeated and I smiled like the Cheshire cat as I lay my head back on the pillow….I remembered! What a good hostess I am…. !!!
