On this Scripture Sunday, I want to talk about food, comfort food. Of course, I do. 🙂
Food!!! I love to prepare food as you can tell by the recipes I have on this blog and yes, I love to eat food.
I was raised on comfort food like meat and potatoes.
You know the combination, hamburgers and french fries, chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes and gravy, Fried chicken and potato salad.
I love these comfort foods and you toss in dark chocolate in any form and I am one happy person.
Isn’t it interesting that something we need to sustain life within us is also something that is not necessarily healthy for us.
As I savor each bite of these foods, I feel comforted for whatever is on my mind at that time.
The woes of the world are put on the back burner so to speak …at least for a while.
However, we all know that all is not well with the world and as soon as the satisfaction of eating my comfort foods has settled my immediate desire, I realize that it was only a temporary fix and that real comfort is not any specific comfort food. Nor is it drugs, alcohol, money, power or pleasures.
The solution for my need for comfort does not rest in any food.
I need food for the soul.
In Romans 15, the Apostle Paul tells the church that the search for comfort should begin with scripture. “Whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope” (Rom. 15:4).
We live in a broken world, and real satisfying and lasting comfort can only be found through the reading of God’s Word.
The words comfort us, but not temporarily.
We can draw unto Him, lean on Him, trust in Him as we develop our relationship with Him.
Paul goes on to say in Philippians 4:7:
“Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
Have a Blessed Day!
