Spring Seeds and Weeds! Yep! Seeds and Weeds!
OK ….I know many of you are still in the depths of Winter…
Only daughter living in the Midwest woke up to 21 degrees and sunny but feeling like 15 degrees. Brrrrrr….that is cold.
Our weather here in SW Florida is 56 degrees and the expected high is 77 degrees.
“If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden”.
Frances Hogdson Burnett
If your day is dreary, there is a bright spot!
Do you know the catalogs that magically appear in your mailbox this time of year?
Yes! The Garden Catalogs…and the Seed Catalogs and the Hatchery Catalogs.
I guess I have to ignore the Hatchery Catalogs…living in the city you know.
I have always received a catalog from chicken hatcheries. This is a runoff from my days on the ranch in New Mexico and in Kansas and Missouri. I love raising chickens. And I especially love the fresh eggs that I would gather each day!
Since we live in the city now, our city codes are being challenged, as we speak…as many people would like to have a chicken or two for fresh eggs. I am among that group! I am sure it has something to do with the price of eggs these days, however I have noticed the egg prices going down. Yay!
On the ranch in New Mexico, I had about 15 laying hens. (You do not need a rooster to have eggs daily) My hens were free range and rewarded me daily with eggs. I sold the extra eggs, so the sales more than paid for the feed.
I confess I am on mailing lists for a lot of catalogs (have been for years) ….and I look forward to every single one of them.
“When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest.”
Ernest Hemingway
Flowers and pictures of flowers, have always brightened my day no matter how gloomy or snowy the weather is outside. I love imagining where I could plant new plants.
My dreams of a beautiful flower garden that looks just like the pictures in the catalogs never seem to materialize, but whatever I plant…I take great satisfaction in nurturing them to their fullest flowering capabilities.
On this day, the first day of Spring, I grabbed a few of my flower catalogs and my hot cup of tea.
I am ready to make plans for a vegetable garden as well as adding in a few perennials.
I have already purchased a few plants from our local nursery. Dusty miller, petunias, schefflera, catnip, and tiger lilies, just to name a few. And I am anxious to get them in the ground. Some are annuals which are nice for lots of color.
I have been known to kill a plant or two when I lived in the Midwest….. but I am finding in Florida almost anything grows anywhere… at anytime.
As I walk through my Secret Garden, I always see sprouts of palm shooting up through the ground and I am able to tug easily and remove them.
Unfortunately, weeds are not among those that I have managed to destroy. And again the seasons in Florida that allow plants to flourish, …also allow weeds to flourish too. 🙁
So if you are feeling a little down due to the weather….grab your flower and seed catalogs! If you do not have any…look on line or visit your local nursery and plan to add a new plant to your garden this year. I promise you will look at it daily and feel satisfaction! All it takes is a little corner of your yard. 😉
Now if I could just have a laying hen….
Hugs and Blessings Always
Ask the Lord for rain in the springtime; it is the Lord who sends the thunderstorms. He gives showers of rain to all people, and plants of the field to everyone. —Zechariah 10:1
Good morning, Kari! First of all thank you for visiting my little blog and your kind words. My youngest son and DIL used to have chickens and it was wonderful getting their pretty eggs. I agree that for me just walking into my local nursery is joy for the senses….ahhhhh! Happy weekend blessings to you in Florida. 💐
Thank you Kitty, I have been reading you for a while and relate to you. I also love that your family is so attentive. I needed that when I lost my husband some 25 years ago, and I thank God for my children and friends who supported and encouraged me. Blessings Always🥰
Now Kari, you know weeds are just Gods way of saying, “girl, get out here!”
You are right Pat….I think my problem has a bit of laziness in there somewhere. LOL Hugs and Blessings.
I just bought Zinnia seeds from Johnnys. I hope to get them in the Pennsylvania gardens as soon as we arrive in May. I also have to put chicken wire around them so the bunnies don’t eat them!
Oh, how we all love fresh eggs! That’s another treat we get when we go to Pennsylvania!
Have fun gardening! Except for the weeding!
Kari, I love seed catalogs! I ordered from Johnny’s in January. We will wait until the ground warms up before planting. We had frost this morning.
Our son has chickens and so we always have fresh eggs. Our grands help by gathering the eggs.
Gardening is not for the faint of heart! I think your Secret Garden is charming, my friend!
Oh, I remember this blog, Kari. Brings memories.
My husband is the gardener in our family having planted the three sisters. Last year he used sunflowers in place of the corn. This year he plans to buy plants rather than seeds. He and our fourteen year old granddaughter in NC are always comparing their gardens and sending pictures to each other. We’re in Zone 6, so her garden is always ahead of ours.
First glance at your title I read “Spring Seeds and Weeps”.
Oh Sandy…you are a girl after my own heart!
I love picking green beans, snapping them too… and cooking them with a little salt pork or bacon!
I also enjoy pulling new potatoes from the moist earth…they always smell so good!
And when you pop those little Idaho white potatoes with peas that have been shelled…..joining them in a cream sauce….Wow! there is nothing better!

I remember my mom raising chickens to have fresh eggs every day. She sold both chickens and eggs when we were little.
Also, I remember my grandparents garden; both flowers and vegetables. I loved to pick peas and shell them, pick beans and snap them. It was fun. I didn’t enjoy weeding though. lol
