August’s Whisper, Slipping Into Autumn
August’s Whisper comes from Stardust Poetry and this pretty August poetry should probably come at the beginning of the month, but I wanted to use it for the ending of the Summer and the Beginning of Autumn…(even though I am really not ready for Autumn to begin), I wanted to use the softer colors in the below screen shot for an Autumn table setting. And of course I have a confession to make…over the hedge so to speak, as if no one else will hear it. 🥰 I really sort of threw this setting together without much thought other than the red fox pitcher. It is very simple with few additions other than the basic needs. I picture a simple casserole (see Harvest recipe below) with a salad and perhaps apple cake with whipped cream or ice cream to finish off the meal.
A couple months ago, I found the cutest red fox pitcher and couldn’t resist buying him…at the same time, I saw these cute red fox (and other small animals) salad plates and I believe they have been around for a couple of years, BUT I just had to purchase them. It is true I have said I am not buying any more dishes but I confess the temptation was there and I bought them. Everything else on the table is from my stash. When my two purchases arrived, I put them aside for just the right moment …so when I saw the ‘August’s Whisper’ poem by Dede Hawkins…I knew I had the start of a table.
So let’s get started with this table.
Of course I have to start with the fox pitcher…isn’t he adorable? To keep everything soft and yet rustic, I used a table runner sporting the softer colors of an Autumn’s Whisper. The leaves and background color are muted Autumnal colors. I sat the fox pitcher in the center of the table as sort of a centerpiece and flanked it with 2 rattan shaded lamps. I have several of these lamps with different types of shades and I love to use them because there are no cords or batteries. You charge them using a USB port. I thought of filling the Fox pitcher with flowers but decided simplicity is the key to this table…thoughts? I also used autumn leaves place mats.
Tell me those little foxes aren’t cute? LOL and I like how the leaves on the water glasses match the leaves on the salad plates. The glass ware are from Dollar Tree, I think about 10 years ago. I am not sure they use as much of the seasonal patterns in glass ware that they used to carry.
The flatware is a wooden handled flatware that I have also had for years. I used the fringe muted brown napkins under the dinner plate, but resting on a white charger. I have used the champagne colored goblets in other Autumnal settings, Once when traveling in our motorhome…I set a table in the camper and you can see them here.
I don’t know if you noticed but I added individual salt & peppers at the right top of each plate. Each set depicting little animals, a squirrel and acorn, two little pumpkins, two little owls, and a sweet little turkey with a chopping block near by…LOL poor little thing. That particular turkey doesn’t have a thing to worry about…this early in the season.

Harvest Casserole
Ingredients
- 1 -2 cups shredded or chopped cooked chicken
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup chopped celery
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp poultry seasoning
- 1/2 tsp sage
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1-1/2 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup russet potatoes (chopped into 1/2 inch cubes)
- 1 cup sweet potatoes (chopped into 1/2 inch cubes)
- 2 cups fresh or frozen green beans
- 1 can whole kernel corn
- 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese (or your favorite cheese)
Instructions
- Place all ingredients except cheese in 9X13 baking dish and bake for 1 hour or until veggies are done.
- Remove from oven and stir in cheese, taste for flavor and add additional s&p if necessary. Sometimes I thicken juices or add more broth if I want it more soup like. Also you can add any veggies you have on hand and/or change the chicken to ground beef or pork.

Kari, August Whisper is lovely. I could not resist those sweet little faces either. The fox pitcher and bark is so cute. Love the owls too, because we have had owls here. I love this post and I so want to be at your gorgeous and very warm table, eating that delicous casserole (recipe saved!). I love those dishes — I’ve a soft spot for foxes, so I can see why you used the teapot as a main part of your design. And loving that “birch bark” pitcher, too. Your china pattern is wonderful. Of course, who could resist? And all the “pieces” right down to the table runner just fit into a perfect whole. I adore it to pieces!

Wow, Kari. I am so NOT ready for autumn, yet as soon as I saw this table setting I thought, “Well, OK. Maybe a LITTLE more ready than I was before!” It ticks all my boxes — beautiful autumnal colors and leaves, fabulous dishes (and foxes, no less! I love foxes — but then I loved every single plate!).. Do I have favorites? Well, your fox pitcher and that birch bark pitcher too. I would especially like one like that for the lake. And I am headed off to investigate those usb table lamps. That’s pretty brilliant. It all falls together so well. Right down to the shakers! And that harvest casserole looks to die for!

Dear Kari, Sorry, I’m so late getting on here, but it’s been hectic here. Fall is my favorite season along with spring. I love your tablescape with all the animals. Did I ever tell you a fox had her babies under our deck? Our neighbor saw the babies playing in our back yard and we got to watch them play. We love our housing addition because of the wild life here. We have lived here 47 years and it’s the wild life that made us build here. Deer were frequent here until people started putting up fences. By the way, you know Ron won’t eat chicken. lol

oh Sandy, I do miss the deer and turkeys who used to walk by twice a day in our back yard. We lived by a creek and they walked about 6 am and back about 4 pm. Our wildlife down here is a little more exotic…like bears, alligators, manatees, large cranes and spoonbills, all kinds of snakes, yuck thank goodness they stay further south in the everglades. thanks for stopping by my friend
Love this tablescape, Kari. I have a collection of fox elements and just love your pitcher and plates. The poem is perfect for this time of year. The cicadas’ song has overtaken that of the birds, and even though the garden flowers are still producing, you can sense the seasonal changes with yellowing leaves. Our temps this week have been very accommodating to the subtle changes also. Ready or not, here autumn comes.

Kari, this is a fabulous table to transition from summer to fall. I love the muted colors and especially the new red fox centerpiece and the sweet animal salad plates. The individual salt and pepper shakers are a nice added touch to the table. I checked out you Amazon link. Those Squirrel Harvest Blessings hand towels (even though they are meant for the bathroom) would be a perfect coordinating item for your kitchen.

Good morning, Kari! I love the thought of August’s Whisper. Not wishing to speed up time, but the extreme heat, humidity, and drought conditions have me yearning for autumn. Th fox pitcher is so much fun and I love the muted autumnal colors of your table. I also have the sweet dishes and have used them a couple of times for fall tablescapes. My grands have chosen their favorite and the leftover one is mine. Your table is perfect to slip into autumn with the leaf placemats, s & p shakers, autumn leaf glasses and table runner. Yum, the harvest casserole sounds delicious!

Aren’t those cute little mama’s and babies adorable? As I said I have had them for awhile, but I admired a friend of mine who used the whole set for her everyday dishes. Just so cute. Is “YOUR” pair the owls? LOL !!! 🤗 I also have to admit the heat can be stifling…especially here with the high humidity and high temps….what I do long for is camping in the Midwest as the Captain and I have so many wonderful memories of lakeside camping and long walks along falling leaves trails.
