Butterscotch Brownies And Mitford Snowmen
You might ask what do Butterscotch Brownies and Mitford Snowmen have in common. Picture this…It is an overcast, crisp afternoon and you are curled up on the sofa with a book from the Mitford book series in hand and a steaming cup of hot tea in the other. And sitting on the nearby table beside the cozy fireplace is a plate of butterscotch brownies. Sigh! That is my idea of a perfect way to spend an afternoon in the Fall of the year.

Friends, I love to read and many years ago I started reading a book series based in Mitford NC. You see it all started in the Christmas season of 1998 when a friend of mine gave me three of the cutest little 4 inch snowmen figurines with sticks for arms and sky blue mufflers and stocking caps. Of course I thought they were adorable and when my friend asked if I knew who they were, I had to confess I did not. She said they are Mitford Snowmen from the series of books written by Jan Karon about a fictional small town in North Carolina with a group of eccentric characters that most people can relate to. She explained the novels are Christian-themed, and center on the life of the rector, Father Tim Kavanagh. I was immediately intrigued… as the books I had been reading of late were starting to get titillating as authors seemed to think readers wanted to read about sex and violence. So I set about finding the first book which was titled: “At Home in Mitford”. It was written in 1994 and when I started reading, I could not put it down. I ended up impatiently waiting for each new book to appear from Jan Karon so I could continue reading about the lives of all the wonderful characters in Mitford. There are 15 books in the series with the last one being released a few days ago titled “My Beloved”….and yes, I am reading it now.

Let me tell you a little bit about the author, Jan Karon. Jan wrote her first novel at the age of ten:…. “The manuscript was written on Blue Horse notebook paper, and was, for good reason, kept hidden from my sister. When she found it, she discovered the one curse word I had, with pounding heart, included in someone’s speech. For Pete’s sake, hadn’t Rhett Butler used that very same word and gotten away with it? After my grandmother’s exceedingly focused reproof, I’ve written books without cussin’ ever since.”
Several years ago, Karon left a successful career in advertising to move to the mountain village of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and write books. “I stepped out on faith to follow my lifelong dream of being an author,” she says. “I made real sacrifices and took big risks. But living, it seems to me, is largely about risk.” Once settled into her new home, she had attempted to write a story, but decided it was not what she wanted to say and was beginning to see her dream of writing novels be just a pipe dream. Then one night she awoke from her sleep because she could picture a short, balding, older man walking down the street of a very small town. In her minds eye, the man turned around and he had a white priest collar around his neck…. and so Father Tim Kavanagh was born. She started writing that very night as the storyline spilled onto the pages of her old typewriter. However, after writing several chapters, she wasn’t convinced there was a market for a book without sex, violence or vulgar language. She had her doubts even about the story being well received by her community of friends and neighbors, much less the world outside of her newly adopted home of Blowing Rock. Encouraged by her friends and publisher, she continued her writing about the small town with a big heart. Below are the books from the series and their publish dates. Perhaps you have read one or two? If you haven’t read them, they will make you fall in love with the going’s on of a small town.

Now…. one can not read a good book and not have a snack can one?. (Well I can’t anyway) This recipe is old…and has been in my recipe tin for about 40-50 years. (I must have been a child when I acquired this recipe.) 😉🤣

These Butterscotch Brownies are perfect for Fall as they actually are the colors of Autumn. At least I think they are.

The taste of a Butterscotch Brownie can be described as Rich, Sweet, Buttery, and Slightly Smoky, with hints of Molasses, Vanilla and a touch of saltiness. Add in the pecans and chocolate chips and you have nutty notes with the classically chocolate flavor of the little brown morsels. Yummy!

Recipe Below:

Butterscotch Brownies
Ingredients
- 1 6 ounce pkg Butterscotch chips (morsels)
- 1/4 cup butter (melted)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup pecans (chopped)
- 3/4 cup chocolate chips (morsels)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 6X8 pan with cooking spray or grease with butter (You can use whatever size pan you like, depends on how thick you want your brownie 8X8, 9X9 or 9X13 pan)Melt the butterscotch chips in a microwave or in a double boiler (I like to use a large measuring cup).
- Stir the chips until smooth and add the melted butter and brown sugar to the chips. Cool slightly before adding eggs and vanilla (don't cook the eggs with a too hot mixture)
- Add the flour, baking powder and salt to the butterscotch mixture, stirring well
- Add the chocolate chips and nuts of your choice (if desired)
- Bake at 350 degree oven for about 25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean
- After removing from oven, sprinkle a few chocolate chips on to and cut into squares
Blessings Always

You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light. 2 Samuel 22:29

This makes me want to read the books. I have several of them, but never have read them. I am somewhat of a book hoarder. Lol
Oh, Kari, you made my mouth water with your butterscotch cookies. Absolutely looked delicious. I keep saying I’m going to read the books, but I haven’t yet. I must! I must!
Hugs,
Sandy
You would love them Sandy…and thank you for your kind comments…you know I love to read and lets face it…I love to eat too! LOL
I absolutely LOVE Jan Karon. I have read most of her books and have her cookbook. Loved this post!
I have her cookbook out as we speak and want to make the orange marmalade cake…A good friend of mine gifted me with a small case of orange marmalade because she knows how much I love it. Thanks for stopping by …have a great and glorious week-end.
Oh Kari, I loved all the Mitford series books so very much, but must’ve missed the last few. I always wanted to visit Blowing Rock after reading the delightful series.
Your butterscotch brownies are the perfect Fall treat that I must make soon. Enjoy your book and your treats!
P. S. You probably know that Jan Karon has a cookbook too.
Thanks Kitty for stopping by and I not only know about the cookbook, I have it and it is opened to Esther’s Orange Marmalade Cake as we speak. LOL. I have not been to Blowing Rock but have wanted to visit it …perhaps next year. Happy October dear one.🥰🍁🎃
Good morning, Kari. I would love a butterscotch brownie with my morning coffee, they look delicious! I have read the entire Mitford series and loved each book. I must get the new one! I enjoyed reading more info you shared about Jan Karon.
Happy Tuesday, my friend!
thanks Pam…isn’t it interesting how Jan Karon got started and now she is read all over the world. And now that I think about it…I don’t need any excuse to eat a butterscotch brownie or any snack for that matter. 🥰. I feel at this stage of my life…what does it really matter….but of course in moderation. Have a Blessed day my friend.
I have this whole series on my book shelf and have read every one of them, but can’t say while eating butterscotch brownies! Have a blessed day.
Thanks for stopping by Melody…now that I have finished “My Beloved” (just last night) I am re-reading the series start to finish. Blessings Always…and have a great day.
Oh Kari, I love this! I haven’t read a Mitford book in ages but I think I read them all and loved them. Even made a point to visit Blowing Rock when we were in NC, just to see this spot that was a bit of an inspiration. I have some Mitford snowmen too. I love butterscotch and those brownies are going to be an autumn must! I might omit the chocolate chips (maybe more nuts to replace the bulk) but oh, my! Thanks for sharing it. And also, for coming by mine, too!
thank you Jeanie for your kind comments….I am finishing up the last book in the series and I have a feeling it will be the last we hear from Father Tim Kavanah…but that is ok cuz I am going to start all over and read then in order again. LOL Great idea to add more nuts rather than chocolate chips…I’ll have to remember that. Have a great day and week.
